Stainless Steel Sculpture Fabrication: How Are Sculptures Made?

Stainless steel sculptures can range from small decorative pieces to large public artworks. Although the finished surface may look simple and seamless, the fabrication process behind each sculpture requires careful planning and skilled craftsmanship.

The exact manufacturing process can vary depending on the sculpture’s design, shape, size, and surface finish. This article explains how stainless steel sculptures are made, from the initial concept and fabrication to finishing, packaging, and installation.

Step 1: Concept Design and 3D Modeling

The first stage of stainless steel sculpture fabrication begins with the client’s idea. This may be a hand sketch, reference image, artwork, or simply an initial concept.

Based on the client’s requirements, we develop a 3D model and rendering to show the sculpture’s shape, proportions, size, and overall visual effect. The rendering helps clients better understand the sculpture’s proportions, overall shape, and visual effect before fabrication begins.

At this stage, we also discuss the appropriate stainless steel grade according to the sculpture’s size and installation environment. For outdoor or coastal projects, the differences between 304 vs 316 stainless steel can be an important consideration.

Step 2: Creating the Internal Steel Structure

The internal structure depends on the size, shape, and structural requirements of the sculpture. Smaller or simpler pieces may need only basic support, while larger or more complex designs often require a stronger structural framework.

Based on the approved drawings and final dimensions, Mily’s craftsmen cut and weld steel pipes to build the internal framework. The structure is carefully checked to ensure the correct proportions, connection points, and overall stability.

This internal framework provides load-bearing support for the outer stainless steel panels and helps maintain the correct shape and proportions throughout the fabrication process.

Step 3: Stainless Steel Cutting and Metal Forming

After completing the internal structure, our craftsmen cut the stainless steel sheets into individual panels according to the 3D model and fabrication drawings. They then shape each piece to gradually build the three-dimensional form of the sculpture.

The forming method depends on the shape of the sculpture. Some designs require bending or rolling, while complex curves and irregular forms may require careful hand-forming. For complex curves and irregular shapes, craftsmen adjust and refine each panel to ensure it follows the intended design.

Step 4: Welding and Surface Grinding

After shaping the stainless steel panels, our craftsmen position each piece on the internal framework and begin the welding process. They first use tack welding to temporarily secure the panels and adjust their position.

Once the sections align correctly, our craftsmen carry out full welding along the required joints to firmly connect the stainless steel panels. For sculptures made from multiple sections, the team completes the welding according to the planned connection method and checks the alignment before final assembly.

After completing the welds, our craftsmen grind and smooth the welded areas to reduce visible seams and create more natural transitions between the panels.

Step 5: Surface Polishing and Finishing

After completing the welding and surface grinding, Mily’s craftsmen apply the final finish according to the approved sculpture design.

For a mirror polished finish, they gradually polish the stainless steel surface through multiple stages to create a smooth and highly reflective appearance. For a brushed finish, craftsmen create fine linear textures that give the metal a softer and more subtle look. Mily can also apply a painted finish when the design requires a specific color or visual effect.

Surface finishing is an important part of stainless steel sculpture manufacturing because the final treatment determines the overall appearance of the sculpture and helps create a consistent surface across the finished work.

Step 6: Quality Inspection and Final Assembly

Before packaging, Mily’s team inspects the finished sculpture and checks its overall shape, dimensions, welding quality, and surface finish.

For sculptures produced in multiple sections, our team carries out a trial assembly in the factory to check the alignment and connection points before shipment. For metal water feature sculpture, we can also conduct a water test before delivery to check the water flow and overall fountain effect.

This final stage of the stainless steel sculpture fabrication process helps identify and correct potential issues before the sculpture leaves the factory.

Step 7: Packaging, Shipping and Installation

Before shipment, Mily selects the packaging method according to the size, shape, surface finish, and structural characteristics of each sculpture. Smaller or regularly shaped pieces may use reinforced wooden crates, while large or irregular sculptures often require a custom steel frame to provide stronger support during transportation.

Our team first protects the finished surface with soft protective materials to reduce the risk of scratches. We then secure the sculpture inside the wooden crate or steel frame with additional supports to limit movement during loading and shipping. For oversized sculptures produced in multiple sections, each section receives separate protection and packaging.

After the sculpture arrives at its destination, the installation method depends on its size and structural design. Smaller pieces may be installed as complete units, while large sculptures are assembled according to the planned connection method. Depending on the design, the final installation may involve bolted connections, on-site welding, and final surface adjustments.

How Long Does Stainless Steel Sculpture Fabrication Take?

The production time for stainless steel sculpture fabrication typically ranges from 8 to 16 weeks, depending on the size, design complexity, internal structure, surface finish, and number of fabrication sections.

Large-scale projects with complex curved forms, extensive mirror polishing, or detailed sectional assembly may require 20 weeks or more.
